New Media Proposal (16.11.11)
In today's session we were supposed to come up with a proposal to implement new media at schools. The budget we had to keep in mind was either 10k or 50k.
We think that a school needs Internet access in order to make meaningful use of the new media. As parent groups might have a problem with WLAN due to “Elektrosmog” we thought about creating two or three Hot Spots in the school and allow for normal LAN access in the other rooms. Additional costs will result due to wiring, network maintenance and setup.
Then we would contact software enterprises with a media plan and ask them if they can help us to implement it. Some names that come to my mind are Dell, Microsoft, or regular distributors like Media Markt. Some well-placed articles about social engagement might boost a corporations standing, so why not use schools as a playground for marketing?
What we need are two or three computers in the library, so students can research and browse in their free time. Since these will be available to all students at all times they can be old and used. There are multiple websites that offer used computer equipment to schools (e.g. http://www.eastcomp.de ).
Furthermore we would need at least two notebook stations, so that we could make use of our Hot Spots. I would suggest that each notebook stations contain about 15 notebooks, so there’s one notebook for two students in a class. If we calculate 300-500 Euros per notebook, there’s 9-15k for you already. We’d need another 500 Euro to equip these stations with a beamer in order for students to share their results with the rest of the class.
Assuming that the MLS has all of this technical equipment already (and more if you consider the locked cabinets in each room containing a flatscreen and DVD-player) we have more room to get creative. As SmartBoards are not yet a significant upgrade over the classic blackboard, we would suggest not to invest any money into this technology as of now.
