"Structuring Teaching Material"
The second session of our Presenting Content course was supposed to give us an idea of how to structure teaching material. Prior to the session our task had been to bring a worksheet to class, so we could discuss and analyze its layout. It became clear that quite often students don't even know what the worksheets are about since they are completely missing headlines or clear visible task-assignments. Coherent font sizes, styles or headers and footers were also part of the discussion. Equipped with this knowledge we were then told to conduct a do-over of our worksheet and apply our new rigorous standards of layout excellence to it. Et voila: take a look at the image embedded in this text and you can see the result. This worksheet about the distinction between formal and informal style is quite simple. The task assignments and the two texts are clearly distinguished from it each other and follow each other in an order that makes sense in order to conduct the task. The shadows around the text boxes are meant to support the visual distinction between the given tasks. With our minds now turned to the basic elements of a layout we will now go on to talk about Design Basics, so that we won't only be able to tell what constitutes a good layout but also to carry it out into action.
